Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Celebrates
Milestone With “Topping Out” Ceremony

SANTA BARBARA – July 9, 2009

Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and McCarthy Building Companies celebrated a milestone in the construction of the new hospital. One of the final structural steel beams for the new Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital was put in place as part of a “topping out” ceremony. The beam was signed by Cottage employees prior to a crane hoisting it onto the roof of what will be the Diagnostic & Treatment Center.

A brief program took place starting at noon and featured speeches from Ron Werft, Cottage Health System, president and CEO; and Steve Mynsberge, McCarthy Building Companies, executive vice president for healthcare services. The audience included Cottage representatives and more than 200 construction workers currently involved with the project.

“We are fortunate to be in partnership with McCarthy and proud to celebrate this important occasion,” Mr. Werft said during his address. “The new hospital is designed to be a place of health and healing. A place where skilled medical professionals come together to provide a safe and secure environment to meet the healthcare needs of our entire region.”

The demolition of a former parking structure to make way for the new hospital resulted in 15,000 tons of crushed concrete that was then reused to form part of the foundation for the new structures.  All together, 90 percent of the demolished structure was recycled and prevented from contributing to landfills.
