Learning The Way Home

For the past 90 years, passionate and well-educated young physicians have come to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital (SBCH) to advance their medical training and learn from Santa Barbara’s talented network of physicians. Enriching the hospital’s team of caregivers, the accomplished residents further their education through the Graduate Medical Education Program in the fields of surgery, radiology, and internal medicine.

Hailing from prestigious medical institutions around the world, many of these residents graduated at the top of their medical classes. They bring a breadth of skills and knowledge gained not only from medical research and varied clinical experiences, but also from volunteer service such as caring for the homeless in the US and serving impoverished people in Ethiopia, Uganda and other countries. Their personal interests and achievements are no less impressive. One young physician was ranked sixth overall in the world climbing competition series, while another owned and operated his own inflatable bounce house rental business as an undergraduate at UCLA.

This year 18 new residents joined Cottage’s team of nurses, physicians, and staff to deliver compassionate and quality care at SBCH.

What Is A Teaching Hospital ?

A teaching hospital is a hospital that provides clinical and educational training to future and current
health providers.

Why Are Teaching Hospitals Important?

Teaching hospitals attract accomplished medical faculty experienced in treating complex cases.Across the country, teaching hospitals encourage collaborative discussion and stimulate thought that often results in new cures and treatments. They are also the home to many critical care services, such as trauma centers, and offer state-of-the-art technologies and the latest treatment therapies. Residents are always supervised by an attending physician, creating an entire team of doctors consulting on individual cases and providing the hospital with round-the-clock physician coverage.

About Our Teaching Hospital

Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital is a teaching hospital offering residencies in the fields of internal medicine, diagnostic radiology, and general surgery. Last year more than 300 physicians applied for just three open positions in our prestigious surgical residency program, allowing SBCH to select the highest caliber doctors to study in our community. For more than 30 years Cottage's internal medicine residency program has partnered with the Keck School of Medicine of USC to teach a number of the school's senior medical students selected for rotation at SBCH. The voluntary faculty of SBCH's medical education program have voluntary faculty status at USC as well.

For the greater Santa Barbara community, training physicians here is an important factor in keeping doctors local to provide care when the nation faces a possible shortage of physicians in the future. More than 80 physicians who studied at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital are now practicing in our community.
