Infection Protection

We are exposed to germs and viruses on a daily basis. How can we stay healthy?

Maintain healthy habits, such as:

  • Get enough rest
  • Eat a well balanced diet, including fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, leafy greens, cauliflower, all rich in vitamin C
  • Drink plenty of fluid
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Exercise regularly. Moderate physical exercise produces positive effects on the immune system
  • Decrease stress

During cold and flu season, touching environmental surfaces, such as computer keyboards, telephones, shopping carts and door handles are all opportunities for picking up germs and viruses.  Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose and mouth. These areas all act as portals of entry for germs and viruses. Keep frequently touched surfaces at work and home clean.

Wash your hands frequently. You can wash with soap and water for 15 seconds. Remember to turn off the tap with a paper towel, otherwise you are just re-contaminating your hands with what you just washed off.  Or you can use 70% based Alcohol hand gel, rubbing until dry.

Carry alcohol hand rub with you. Keep wipes in the car for when you pump gas or if you stop to get food. It is a great way for everyone to wash their hands before eating.

Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. And encourage others to do the same. Explain that if they cough into their sleeve or upper arm, they won't contaminate their hands.

Encourage people who are sick to stay home. Tell them that they are not doing anyone a favor by being at work or school.

Last but not least -- get your flu shot and stay current with all vaccines!
