CSU Channel Islands and Cottage Team Up

Aspiring nurses soon will be able to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree right here in Santa Barbara.

Cottage Health System and California State University Channel Islands (CI) have formed a new partnership to make CI’s BSN degree program available locally. Beginning in January 2012, the new BSN extension campus in the Santa Barbara area will open to 22 students.

This new endeavor builds on Cottage’s successful partnership with Santa Barbara City College’s Associate Degree in Nursing Program.

Healthcare providers across the nation anticipate a nursing shortage over the next several decades. Currently, nursing schools lack the capacity to graduate enough students to meet the nation’s projected nursing needs.

According to Herb Geary, Cottage’s Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President, Patient Care Services, “With the ‘baby boomer’ generation of nurses retiring, it is critical to develop our community workforce through additional educational partnerships. Our collaboration with SBCC has shown that nurses who are educated locally are more likely to make a career commitment to Cottage.”
