Bella Riviera: Workforce Homes

The Workforce Homes Project at the former St. Francis Hospital site was initiated by the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Foundation (SBCH Foundation) as a means of providing affordable homes to meet the housing demands faced by those employed by the Cottage Health System.

The SBCH Foundation has formed an entity called the Villa Riviera Real Estate Company (VRE) to develop the newly named Bella Riviera. VREhas contracted with Irvine-based SL Residential (SLR) to build the Bella Riviera condominiums and market the units for sale.

The project consists of the demolition of the former St. Francis campus buildings and the construction of 115 townhomes on the approximately 5.9 acre site. SBCH Foundation is undertaking this project in order to provide 81 affordable homes to our employees. The homes will be built using the Santa Barbara Built-Green "3-star" rating.

Our goal is to improve CHS’s ability to attract and retain medical professionals in order to preserve the high quality of health care in the greater Santa Barbara community. The purposes and strengths of this unique project include:

  • increasing the supply of quality affordable homes
  • retaining existing Cottage employees
  • recruiting medical professionals to our community
