The Stroke Program
In August 2009, the Santa Barbara Neuroscience Institute at Cottage Health System became the first facility between Los Angeles and San Jose to achieve Primary Stroke Center Certification from The Joint Commission, demonstrating a solid commitment to meeting or exceeding national standards and guidelines for improving stroke outcomes.

What does it mean to be certified as a
Primary Stroke Center?
The Joint Commission's primary stroke center certification program was developed in collaboration with the American Stroke Association. It is based on the Brain Attack Coalition's "Recommendations for the Establishment of Primary Stroke Centers."
Distinction as a primary Stroke Center helps us to stand apart from the rest:
| |
• |
|
Compliance with consensus-based national standards |
| |
• |
|
Effective use of primary stroke center recommendations and clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care. |
| |
• |
|
Evaluating ways to improve Performance and clinical practice, thereby improving patient care |
"We want to make sure we're doing what's best for patients, and adhering to The Joint Commission's stroke care criteria is in everyone's best interest," says Philip Delio, MD, stroke neurologist and medical director of the stroke program.

Through a dedicated team approach, the Stroke Center offers a comprehensive approach to care that includes a multi-disciplinary team of professionals who work together using evidence based practice coupled with the latest advances in treatment modalities. We are committed to improving the quality of life for our patients and in the emotional resource support of their families.
Stroke care starts with community education and prevention. We take our role in community education and stroke prevention very seriously and in 2009 we launched a stroke awareness campaign in that includes personal medical screenings, radio, TV, and print media education. Learn more about stroke >>
