Pautas para la detección
Organizaciones tales como la Iniciativa Global para la Enfermedad Pulmonar Obstructiva Crónica (GOLD, Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease), la Fuerza de Tarea de Servicios Preventivos de los Estados Unidos (USPSTF, United States Preventive Services Task Force), el Colegio Americano de Médicos (ACP, American College of Physicians), el Colegio Americano de Médicos Torácicos (ACCP, American College of Chest Physicians), la Sociedad Torácica Americana (ATS, American Thoracic Society) y la Sociedad Respiratoria Europea (ERS, European Respiratory Society) no recomiendan las pruebas de detección en personas que no presentan síntomas.

Sin embargo, si una persona presenta síntomas de EPOC, el médico realizará pruebas tales como la espirometría para detectar si padece esta condición.
