Stewart and Louisa MacDougall Award $5 Million to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Foundation

Alexander “Stewart” and Louisa MacDougall have committed $5 million to support The Campaign for Cottage Health System.

The gift will support construction, repair, and maintenance needs of the Cottage Eye Center, including the acquisition of important medical equipment.  To honor their commitment, the facility, located at 2400 Bath Street in Santa Barbara, will be renamed the Stewart and Louisa MacDougall Eye Center.

Mr. MacDougall is an industrial and architectural designer of golf equipment, marine equipment, furniture, home architecture and sculpture. He holds 10 golf-related patents, and he is the author of 10 books about golf, one on sailing, and two books about industrial design (including “Alexander Stewart MacDougall Design Book: A Fifty Year History of Design 1950 -2000”).

“The Cottage Eye Center has provided excellent care to our community and our family, and we would especially like to acknowledge the professionalism and expertise of Dr. Stuart Winthrop and to thank him for the wonderful gift he has given to us:  the preservation of Louisa’s vision,” said Mr. MacDougall. “Cottage Health System is committed to providing the highest level of medical care to our region, and we are pleased to be able to participate in the Campaign to rebuild Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.”

“This is truly an inspiring commitment and we are extremely grateful to Stewart and Louisa MacDougall for their incredible generosity to our organization,” said Ron Werft, president and chief executive officer of Cottage Health System based in Santa Barbara. “Their thoughtful gift will allow Cottage to continue to lead the way with one of the most sophisticated microsurgical facilities on the Central Coast, and it helps us surpass the $90 million mark toward our $100 million fundraising goal.”

All three Cottage facilities in Santa Barbara, Goleta and the Santa Ynez Valley must undergo seismic upgrading to meet California’s mandated requirements for all acute-care hospitals in the state. However, no local, state or federal funds are available to fund the projects.

Cottage Health System has a goal to raise $100 million in funds through the community’s support for the new Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, $7 million to assist with the Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital project, and a philanthropic initiative still to be set for Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital, which is in the preliminary stage of its campaign planning.

About Cottage Health System

The not-for-profit Cottage Health System -- the parent organization of Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital (with its associated Cottage Children’s Hospital and Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital), Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital, and Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital -- is guided by a 20-member volunteer board of directors from the greater-Santa Barbara community.

Last year, the Cottage hospitals provided inpatient care for 21,000 people, treated 63,000 patients through their 24-hour emergency departments and helped deliver 2,800 newborns.
