Outdoor Dining Area at
New Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital
Will Recognize Inskeep Gift

(December 2005) A $1 million gift from part-time Montecito residents Jerry and Jackie Inskeep will result in naming the outdoor dining area at the new Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in their honor, it was announced this week by The Campaign for Cottage Health System.

The Inskeeps, who have been South Coast residents for little more than a year and who spend the majority of time at their home on San Juan Island in northern Washington State, told the hospital that when they first arrived in town, they read of the proposed new Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and the need for individual financial support. "Because the island on which we live in Washington is too small to support even a modest hospital," Mr. Inskeep explained, "we decided to make a major commitment to our new community through this gift to Cottage. And because we are both interested in healthy food and relaxed dining, we have asked that our donation be used to finance the outdoor dining facilities in the new hospital."

The Inskeep gift brings total charitable donations toward the $100 million campaign beyond the $34 million level. (Read about other recent gifts to the Campaign.)

Jerry Inskeep, Jr., formed his own investment firm with James Rippey in 1961 after leaving his position at Merrill Lynch. Rippey and Inskeep, Inc. later became Columbia Management Company, establishing Oregon's first mutual fund in 1967 (Columbia Growth Fund), and subsequently one of the first money-market mutual funds in the country in 1974 (Columbia Daily Company). In 1997, the firm was acquired by Fleet Financial Group of Boston.

Enthusiastic snow skiers, the Inskeeps have five adult children, and have a history of philanthropic generosity in the education and arts arena. This is their first major gift to support health care and their first donation to the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Foundation.

The largest and most ambitious community philanthropic effort in the hospital's history, The Campaign for Cottage Health System will help pay for the $500+ million replacement of Santa Barbara's only acute-care hospital. The phased construction project, for which ground was officially broken this summer, is already under way at the site of the original hospital of the 1880s. When completed at the end of 2012, it will meet the new unfunded seismic safety requirements set by the State for all California hospitals. No local, state or federal funds are available to assist with this required project.

The not-for-profit Cottage Health System consists of Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, a regional trauma center and teaching hospital, with its associated Cottage Children's Hospital; Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital; and Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital. Last year, the hospitals provided inpatient care for 21,000 people, treated 62,000 patients through their 24-hour emergency departments, and helped deliver 2,900 newborns. With a staff of more than 2,500, Cottage is the largest private employer in the County.
