Da Vinci Surgical System – This state-of-the-art surgical system incorporates robotic technology that helps surgeons perform more precise, minimally invasive procedures. The surgeon sits at a special console observing a three-dimensional view of the surgical area and places his hands in special devices called masters.  The system allows the surgeon’s hand movements to be scaled, filtered and translated into precise movements of micro-instruments placed within the operative site. Unlike traditional laparoscopic instruments that are straight and do not bend, the da Vinci instruments move like a human wrist and are small enough to fit through keyhole incisions. 

Benefits to the patient include decreased blood loss, shortened length of hospital stay, decreased postoperative pain, less scarring and faster return to regular activities as compared to open procedures. 

At Cottage, a number of experienced surgeons are receiving special training using the da Vinci system starting in the areas of urology, gynecology, bariatric (weight loss), and other surgeries.
