Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital is one of only three hospitals in the nation in communities of fewer than 500,000 residents to offer such a comprehensive scope of services. Our plan is to rebuild Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital to ensure that we can meet updated seismic standards and continue to provide this high quality health care to our neighbors well into the future. The objective of our plan to rebuild in the existing neighborhood is to comply with new seismic safety standards while creating the best possible hospital and minimizing disruption of services. Cottage is committed to respecting our neighbors by providing adequate off-street parking, improving neighborhood traffic circulation, and minimizing land acquisitions, street closures, and view impacts. The cost to rebuild SBCH is expected to be $700+ million. And while the state requires all hospitals to rebuild to meet new seismic standards, there is no public money for these costly projects. CHS must find the money or close the doors. In addition to using CHS assets and operating cash, borrowing money, and tapping into the assets of the hospital's foundation, CHS has launched a capital campaign to raise $100 million for the new SBCH. By June 2008, more than $90 million has been raised toward this goal.
