Tumor Program
Brain tumors are a mass of tissue growth resulting from the buildup of extra cells that either did not die after becoming old or damaged or new cells that formed when the body did not need them. Brain tumors can either be benign (do not have cancer cells) or malignant (brain cancer). Tumors are named according to either the type of cells or the part of the brain where the cells began and are graded by the way the cells look under a microscope.
Treatment of brain tumors can include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or a combination of these treatments. At Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, procedures and treatments are conducted by a specialized team of dedicated board certified neurosurgeons, nurses, therapists, and support staff.
