Cottage Children’s Hospital Telethon Raises More Than $500,000

Thanks to the community for supporting the 2009 Children's Miracle Network Telethon!

A special weekend focusing on the needs of critically ill infants and children took place May 30-31 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital during the Children’s Miracle Network broadcast.

Pledges from viewers and sponsors continued the 23-year tradition of community support which has helped to build an impressive range of neonatal and pediatric services for local children.  These include Santa Barbara County’s first neonatal intensive care unit, the region’s only pediatric intensive care unit, and the only pediatric cancer program between Santa Barbara and the Bay Area.

The telethon raised significant funds this year totaling more than $525,000 (estimate) to support continued high quality children’s services at Cottage Children’s Hospital. The final tally of funds raised won’t be available until the end of June.

Every dollar raised in the area during the Children’s Miracle Network broadcast will remain in the area to help children hospitalized at Cottage Children’s Hospital.

The broadcast showcased a number of touching stories about local children and teens, some of whom owe their lives to the doctors and nurses who treated them and to the technology made possible through community donations.

New to this year’s telethon broadcast was the Student Talent Show, which featured pre-taped music and dance performances from local junior high and high school students. During telethon weekend, those watching the program at home or at the hospital were able to participate in “text voting” on their cell phones to vote for their favorite performances.

The winning performance was the Rockin’ Pop Kids with Brooke Wallace on vocals. Brooke, 12 years old, and a student at La Colina Junior High, was a recent patient at Cottage Children’s Hospital. Her story was featured during the telethon broadcast.   The band also includes: Claudia Riveroll, age 13, La Colina Jr. High, lead guitar; Fabio Rodriguez, age 11, Peabody Charter School, on bass; and Marco Rodriguez, age 13, Santa Barbara Jr. High, on drums.
