This course was developed for patient-care personnel with rudimentary knowledge of the Spanish language, especially as it is used in the hospital.  Participants will practice pronunciation, vocabulary and conversational skills.  Emphasis will also be placed on improving comprehension of patients’ questions and concerns. 


Individual and small-group work will focus on routine conversational exchanges, such as “Do you need anything?”;  “I’m going to start an IV”;  visitor policy, etc.

Course Objectives:

  • Improve pronunciation of Spanish letters, basic words and phrases used at bedside.
  • Communicate with increasing clarity directions and basic information in Spanish about healthcare issues.
  • Comprehend more of the Spanish spoken by patients or family members.
  • Appreciate cultural issues that are important to the Latino patient.
  • Understand CHS language policy, and state/federal language-access laws & guidelines

Attendance at all three sessions is required for continuing education credit.
