Course Objectives:

• Use the newly revised 2008 NICHD nomenclature in identifying fetal heart rate patterns.
• Outline the FHR patterns indicating probable acidemia (i.e. "abnormal.")
• Differentiate normal, indeterminant, and abnormal FHR patterns
• Define "tachysystole."
• Discuss evidence-based interventions and management of FHR tracing using actions based on physiology.
• Review acid-base balance in the fetus and the newborn and apply them to various case studies.
• Using a patient safety format, apply specific fetal emergency situations including both risk for occurrence and interventions to improve fetal oxygenation.
• Review legal aspects of electronic fetal monitoring.
